Builder Summit is an international summer school and architecture festival organized by Hello Wood in the abandoned basalt quarry of Zalahaláp, Hungary. The site of the festival, the abandoned quarry is a wounded landscape that shows an exciting contradiction: the production of building materials inevitably involves demolition. This year’s Hello Wood Builder Summit explores the relationships between intervention and naturalness, demolition and construction, and absence and replenishment. Our daily lives are fundamentally reinterpreted by pandemics, wars, economic crises, and global warming. The issue of demolition and reconstruction is not only relevant from an architectural point of view, but the Hello Wood Builder Summit is also a response to the social situation.
As you step foot into this awe-inspiring setting, you'll be greeted by an explosion of innovative designs, each structure pushing the boundaries of imagination and craftsmanship. The basalt quarry serves as a magnificent backdrop, enhancing the unique blend of organic beauty and human creation. You'll find yourself wandering through a labyrinth of artful installations, soaring sculptures, and visionary pavilions, all paying homage to the rich geological history of the quarry while pushing the limits of architectural innovation.
" The production of building materials inevitably involves demolition."
After a 3-year hiatus, Hello Wood's education programme is back as Builder Summit - bigger, better and more exciting than ever. In 2023 we will not only create wood installation but also land art projects. For the first time in Hello Wood's history, we welcome AR and metaverse projects to the festival. And if it's not enought: we will also bring the coolest crater party of the summer to the post-apocalyptic mine of Zalahaláp.
This year's Hello Wood international summer school & festival will be held in an abandoned, post-apocalyptic quarry, in Zalahaláp, Hungary. The basalt mine has a 360-degree look of Lake Balaton, neighboring hills, and nature. We invite projects to recultivate the mine, to make it a special destination for visitors. The terrain has small mounds, flat surfaces, and basalt stones for use. Projects must reflect on this year's Builder Summit topic: construction and demolition. Builder Summit will host a 2-day long music festival, so any project that provides function during the summer's coolest crater party is welcome.
